28 Weeks Later

Went to see 28 Weeks Later with a group of friends after meetup, and

It was a bitter disappointment.
I kept waiting for the character development, and the plot development; but it turned out to be almost a videogame of someone's 2-dimensional fanfic.
The army, USA troops, turned out to be hopelessly inadequate, rude, stupid, and completely devoid of kindness. Especially inadequate.
Every scene had an example of their inadequacy: giving a civillian an access all areas swipe card (which he can manage to use even when zombified); letting the kids escape (by ducking down and walking behind the sentries) into the non-safe part of London; not following them immediately when they were spotted (i.e. immediately); using the term "containment room" in a metaphorical sense...
The only 'good' American/soldier were the ones breaking orders.
There was no character development, no political statement (besides "The US Army likes to kill people"); and no crazy non-zombified individuals who were pursuing their own dubious agenda. It was so formulaic - good guys (kids) vs. zombies vs. US Army. Show up, add men with guns (and fire bombs and gas and helicopters), add zombies.
It wasn't even shot particularly well. They had a few effects, which worked well, but too much of the pivotal action happened in the dark, without flickering or low lighting. A key character died, and it took me about a minute to realise what had happened because it was not clear through the night-light rifle scope effect they occasionally used.

Overall: It would make a good video game. Possibly a good role-playing game. If they took out the reference to the first movie, it would probably make an ok zombie movie (because seriously? who has high expectations for those!).

But I liked the first one a lot, and not just as a zombie movie; so this was a shitty sequal.

(BTW - there is not even an alternate ending after the credits, so don't bother waiting.)

... I didn't like it as much as the first one.
